Description
Volunteers serving with the Immigration Legal Services will work with our staff to assist clients in the preparation and filing of their applications for immigrant benefits from US Citizenship and Immigration Services. Volunteers will join one of the following volunteer groups:
Intake - Assists our intake team with interviewing potential clients seeking our services. The interview gathers demographic information, and screens clients for eligibility for our programs and grant funding. These interviews are given both in person and over the phone. Training on how to give a trauma-informed interview is required for this team.
Form Preparation - Assists the paralegals with completing USCIS forms which are assigned by a legal representative. Schedules meetings with clients over the phone or in-person to complete their applications. Training for this team involves shadowing the paralegals and completing the forms under their supervision.
Research and writing - Assists the legal representatives with research on case law or country conditions to support their legal arguments, drafts briefs and motions. Volunteers with prior legal experience are preferred for this team. Work for this team can be done on-site or remotely.
The tasks and responsibilities of this role include:
- Complete Catholic Charities volunteer onboarding process and ILS specific volunteer training
- Regularly meet with ILS staff for assignments and supervision
- Utilize legal case management software and office equipment
- Complete assignments remotely or on-site

Qualifications:
18 and older
Completion of Refugee 101
6 month time commitment (preferred)
VIRTUS training required
