Mentors serving with the Migration and Refugee Services will work with a newly arrived refugee family in their home for three months as a guide, an advocate and a friend. Mentors will aid refugees in their acclimation to the United States in supportive ways through cultural orientation such as: helping them navigate the customs and norms of day-to-day living (ex. how to use the washer/dryer, oven, microwave, etc.), helping them practice their English, resume and job interview preparation, and basic money budgeting or simply just spending time and being someone they can trust for questions, concerns or issues that may arise. There is no one prescribed activity required, and being a mentor is really flexible, rewarding and fun!
The tasks and responsibilities of this role include:
- Build trusting, friendly relationship with mentee family, and assist with basic orientation tasks and activities as described above.
- Regularly communicate with staff in the Migration & Refugee department
- Administrative responsibilities: track volunteer hours, provide a description of the activities performed during the week, and list miles traveled (if applicable)
MRS resettles approximately 400 refugees annually from countries including Bhutan, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Burma, Ethiopia, Liberia, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Burundi, Eritrea, Egypt, Democratic Republic of Congo, Syria, Central African Republic, Mauritania, Cuba, and Venezuela.
