Volunteer: Community Based/Human Services Intern

Catholic Charities, Fatima Family Center Community-Based Services for At-Risk Youth (formerly Family to Family Neighborhood System of Care) works with families residing in Cuyahoga County who are involved or are at risk of being involved with the Cuyahoga County Division of Children and Family Services.  Our primary focus is to link families to community resources and refer families to services that may help prevent out of home placements. We also work to reunify children with biological or relative family members.

We are looking for a few human services students to join our team this school year!  This internship is designed to enrich the intern’s theoretical and practice competencies related to servicing child welfare involved families; young parents who were previous wards of the state; temporary custody (TC) and Permanent Custody (PC); the links between the open child welfare case; foster to adopt placements;  adoption policy and procedure; restoration of parental custody; kinship care; and the commonplace problems of children and teens in care. 

This is achieved by the interns participation in the following activities, including by not limited to:

Learn and implement the Catholic Charities Community Based Services Client Enrollment Protocol. Learn and execute the referral process of coordinating care in the areas of mental health, addiction, domestic violence, anger management and linkages to housing/utilities resources. Provide program clients and walk-in customers with both telephone and face-to-face resource and referral information supports. Provide direct services in the form of assessment and case management supports addressing a variety of issues to include: basic needs, emergency assistance; and family enrichment problem solving and planning.
Make client-related visits with CBS Supervisor or Service Specialists for family and extended family at homes, school sites, Department of Children and Family Services and Juvenile Detention Services facilities as needed. Aid community and child welfare clients in setting goals for family advancement and enrichment. Participate in weekly supervision activities to examine funders and systems level informational updates; and emergent team and agency-based issues that impact programming with the team.    

All candidates must be:          

Currently enrolled in the Cuyahoga Community College Human Services Program as a Student in Good Standing.          Able to develop relationships with the program’s biological parents, kinship parents, infants, children and teens living in the Hough, St. Clair Superior, Asia Plaza and lower downtown neighborhoods.          Knowledgeable about human development and services to individuals across the life span.         Computer literate with a working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office software.       Able to form good working relationships with a variety of metropolitan area agencies that include: schools, juvenile and common pleas and Muny court systems, utility companies and housing entities.        Able to manage boundaries in the social services delivery process.           Good written and verbal communicators fingerprinted to complete BCI/FBI criminal record checks.
